Language is the center of everything human. Linguistics is the interdisciplinary study of human language. The 21-credit Linguistics Minor is designed to help you gain knowledge about language and its significance in society, sharpen your critical thinking, and prepare you for a world of linguistic diversity. You will learn to transcribe and analyze speech sounds, examine how languages vary and change over time, and carry out analysis of word structure, sentence structure, and meaning.
After the introductory course, you choose your path in consultation with a linguistics faculty advisor. Linguistics electives range across phonetics, phonology, semantics, morphology and syntax, the history of the English language, psycholinguistics, translation studies, and language and society. An interdisciplinary elective then connects your study of language to fields such as anthropology, philosophy, world languages, communication, and speech-language sciences.
°®ÒºAƬ is proud to house one of only two linguistics programs in the state of Colorado. The minor complements majors across the University: computer science students working with the language technologies behind artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and machine translation; education students preparing to teach language and literacy; psychology students curious about how the mind processes language; world languages students deepening their understanding of how languages work; and any student who wants to think rigorously about the way we communicate.

Take me to the CLAS Student Success RoadmapThis is a hands-on field. You will practice transcribing and analyzing speech sounds, explain how languages vary and change, carry out morphosyntactic and semantic analysis, and integrate research materials into your own written work.
Your electives are chosen in consultation with a linguistics faculty advisor, so your minor can follow your interests, whether that means the sound systems of language, the structure of sentences and meaning, the history of English from its earliest forms to today, or language in society.
The minor includes an interdisciplinary elective drawn from anthropology, philosophy, French, German, Spanish, speech-language-hearing sciences, and communication and gender studies, reflecting how the study of language reaches into nearly every field.
